Tried and failed. A former coworker's favorite book that she lent to me with wide open dewy eyes, pleading silently that everyone else adore it as much as she did. I need to dodge those situations better. ...more

A bunch of my goodreads friends loved this book, so I had high expectations for it. That and the fact that I felt pressured to finish it before it was due back at the library made it so I didn't really enjoy it. I promise I'm not consciously trying to hate all the things you like so I can be some pretentious hipster. Obviously this book has amazing writing! Great characters. Love the portrayal of living in a fascist country, the radio whiz, the lockmaker, and the blind girl. Sometimes it gets a bit ponderous and philosophical with the prose, those sections are not my favorite.

I know this book has been on the bestseller lists for quite a while but I didn't love it. In fact, there were times when I considered putting it down for good. I liked it but I just couldn't quite get into it the way I had expected to. ...more

A book that I am very happy to have bought --- the story of Werner and Marie-Laure is almost impossible to put down, and a book that I believe will reveal more and more with each subsequent reading.
