This is such a gorgeous book. The life of Francie Nolan, her brother, mother, and doomed father is so clearly written, so heartbreaking and beautiful and terrible at the same time, that even on a second reading I could not put the book down! I was fascinated to read the introduction to this edition as well, written by Anna Quindlen. Apparently, the first version of this book was a memoir, but Betty Smith's publisher basically told her no one would want to read a memoir like that, so she turned i

A girl comes of age in turn of century Brooklyn. There are great scenes in this novel, such as when Francie finds out she wants to be a writer. Other things just made me think of Lifetime movies--of course, all the women are strong and hardworking and the men are alcoholic or run off. I give it 3.5 stars because it is well-written, just not to my taste.
