This is my favorite book of all time. I love the Nolan family. Francie is one of the best characters in the history of American Literature.
If you haven't read this book, or if you haven't read it since you were assigned in high school or college I advise you to get a copy and go read it ASAP,especially if you want a picture of what the Williamsburg, Brooklyn is like, not the Yuppie trap it has become as of recent times. ...more

A girl comes of age in turn of century Brooklyn. There are great scenes in this novel, such as when Francie finds out she wants to be a writer. Other things just made me think of Lifetime movies--of course, all the women are strong and hardworking and the men are alcoholic or run off. I give it 3.5 stars because it is well-written, just not to my taste.
