This is an interesting story, and has a solid ending, but it took a LONG time to get there, through a lot of clunky worldbuilding (Other character: This is the thing. Yiene: What is the thing? I'm not from here. Other character: Lengthy explanation. Repeat.). I'm still not entirely sure if the ending was in any way expected, since I was never quite clear on the magic system here. Yeine is the kind of character I really like - strong, but not infallible; smart, though not immune to misdirection and lies; and human enough to make wonderfully horrible mistakes.
Though I'd heard of this book, it didn't really catch my attention when it came out a few years ago. I'm glad it has been chosen for January 2014's Vaginal Fantasy Hangout read because I don't know if I would have read it, otherwise. And that would have been a shame.
