Well. That was one strange and confusing book. I almost abandoned it about 1/3 of the way through because I felt completely lost. I didn't understand what it was about, and I couldn't figure out if it was set in some parallel universe type Nazi-ish/Soviet past or in some Nazi-ish/Soviet dystopian future. I stuck with it and got rather invested in the characters. It was a compelling read, though I'm still not quite sure I understand it all.

This book has so many interesting subthemes-- it could almost be historical, or almost be queer, or almost be a thriller-- but mostly what it is is just good writing. I love books that look at history and say "What if..." and while the words Germany and World War II never appear, it's nonetheless a chilling look at how things might have gone differently.

I admired the craft of this book, but I couldn't really connect ruth ut emotionally. maybe it was actually too short?
