I thought this was a lovely story. You got the idea that yes, horrible things happened during WWII, but it didn't go into the almost prurient detail that some holocaust stories seem to. Ziska experienced tragedy, but also joy, even during the darkest times of the war. Her growth from a little girl who made some bad choices into a mature young woman who came to terms with her past made this book a pleasure to read. ...more

One of the best historical fiction books I've read in the past few years about a German girl who is sent to England during WWII. She is a Jew only by heritage and is "adopted" by an Orthodox Jewish family. Great reading! ...more
