Good modern gothic

I think this is my first Ruth Ware. Pretty good plot! Lots of twists and turns. I wearied a bit of the misunderstandings and double/triple crosses. Hal was a very likable protagonist. I wish she had been a bit more consistently hardass, as she described herself at first. The tattoos and short hair and piercings kinda disappeared.

This was very compelling, but way too long and leisurely paced.
I felt like Ware would pause to describe the location, pose, and beverage of every character in a scene, every blade of grass in an outdoor setting, and most of all how cold and wet Hal constantly was, for no good reason.
Also, there was a lot of repetitive telling. For instance we start by going around and around in Hal's thoughts as she sloooowwwly comes to the decision to go to Trepassen. We all picked up this novel knowing she w ...more
