This was my absolute favorite kind of book: gothic suspense with an orphaned heroine alone in the world who might inherit a fortune, but must go stay in a creepy house in the middle of nowhere with her possibly nefarious long-lost family members and an ominously hostile family servant. Whew! I neglected all chores to be able to finish it and FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED!

I think this is my first Ruth Ware. Pretty good plot! Lots of twists and turns. I wearied a bit of the misunderstandings and double/triple crosses. Hal was a very likable protagonist. I wish she had been a bit more consistently hardass, as she described herself at first. The tattoos and short hair and piercings kinda disappeared.

The narrative is comfortably haunting and mysterious, but not fantastical or irrational--a hallmark of classic British style. The flow feels as if Jane Eyre were to meet the Haunting of Hill House, a delectable labyrinth lulling ...more

Loved, loved, loved this. Creepy, mysterious and reminiscent of Agatha Christie.

This was an amazing audiobook! The narrator, Imogen Church, was brilliant and I was always sad when I arrived at my destination and had to turn off the book. Highly recommended!
