This was my absolute favorite kind of book: gothic suspense with an orphaned heroine alone in the world who might inherit a fortune, but must go stay in a creepy house in the middle of nowhere with her possibly nefarious long-lost family members and an ominously hostile family servant. Whew! I neglected all chores to be able to finish it and FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED!

I think this is my first Ruth Ware. Pretty good plot! Lots of twists and turns. I wearied a bit of the misunderstandings and double/triple crosses. Hal was a very likable protagonist. I wish she had been a bit more consistently hardass, as she described herself at first. The tattoos and short hair and piercings kinda disappeared.

I enjoyed this book and the mystery of it (even though I did guess right), but I just felt it was really slowww. I also wish the flash backs wouldn't have happened so soon in the book because I didn't recognize the significant of certain parts and if they would have happened a little later the flashbacks would have made a little more sense. ...more

Ware prodigiously persists in refining her already masterful craft of story-weaving. The tone is atmospheric, but familiar. The main character demands empathy and reader identification, while the supporting cast is sufficiently varied without a single unnecessary player. The narrative is comfortably haunting and mysterious, but not fantastical or irrational--a hallmark of classic British style. The flow feels as if Jane Eyre were to meet the Haunting of Hill House, a delectable labyrinth lulling

Loved, loved, loved this. Creepy, mysterious and reminiscent of Agatha Christie.
