Wow! I really liked this book.
Thanks so much to Goodreads friend (artist) Laura for telling me more than once about this book and for all her book suggestions to try to help me get out of my latest reading slump.
This is a really cute and clever story. I did predict almost everything major that would happen as soon as it was possible to even guess, or so I thought, but a bit less than 2/3 the way through the book I did get a (pleasant) shock. Also, I knew the ending was one possibility but this ...more

This was fantastic, in all senses of the word! An absolute joy to read as a lover of books, libraries, and especially cozy little bookshops! I wanted to see if there's a comprehensive list anywhere of the books mentioned, A Little Princess and Alice in Wonderland are obvious, Treasure Island and Pride and Prejudice as well, but there were at least a dozen others. A charming story that was a buddy read with my 12-year-old niece. We tried to collaborate on a review but once she moves to a new book she is done with the old.

As a start to a series the premise is set up well, yet leaving room to expand things in future books rather than staying within this books' boundaries. Sometimes these books use favorite books that are not familiar to the target reader, instead relying on those they loved most. The start here leaves me hoping that we'll continue meeting those that my middle grade readers will know and also appreciate meeting

I had this recommended to me by a friend in a very round-about way... he hadn't read it himself, but his wife had bought it, and she immediately thought (even before reading it, I think) that it would be something I would enjoy. As luck would have it, I stumbled across it in a bookstore just the following week, and thought it sounded charming enough, so I decided to pick it up.
(Both my friend and his wife laughed quite hard when they heard that explanation - can't imagine why... :-P )

So cute! I think I enjoyed it more than my 8 year old - it leans pretty heavily on classic children's literature like alice in wonderland, anne of green gables and the little princess. I loved these books as a child but my kiddo isn't familiar with any of them so there was some explaining about the plot.
