I'm so torn about this. I love Lockhart's prose. I love her snappy dialogue and the way she folds social commentary into her narratives. But this book isn't just inspired by The Talented Mr. Ripley (or, as Lockhart says in her author's note, "I cannot possibly name all my influences but particular debt goes to Patricia Highsmith for The Talented Mr. Ripley"): it's pretty much a modern day, genderfucked TTMR AU fanfic. Like, a lot -- a lot -- of characters and plot points match up: not just Tom a

4.5. As other reviews have noted, this bears a striking resemblance to The Talented Mr. Ripley, complete with an antiheroine. Lockhart's prose is sharp and delicious, and her social commentary is absolutely on-point. (Has she been listening to my book club conversations and reading the texts between me and my BFF? If so, geez, E. Lockhart, at least come have a glass of wine with us!)

Jule is living it up at a hotel in Mexico, telling people she's Imogen Sokoloff. As the story moves backward through time, Jule's friendship with Immi becomes less and less as it initially appeared, and the lies Jule has told about her past unravel.
The format of this story reminded me a bit of the movie "Memento" - while Jule doesn't not have any memory problems, it's the truth that's being remembered the further back we go. The present story - Jule being discovered at the hotel and having to ma ...more

i really don't know how i felt about the book, it was most told in a lovely way and i liked the way it went back with each chapter, though could say that after a while that was a bit too much!! the writing was mesmerizing, but not sure how i felt about the story and about the mc, though love to see what everyone else thinks about it. and feeling wise while i couldn't put it down, i felt bad and unhappy all the time, can't say i enjoyed this feeling of thunder right beyond there, all the time, ev

Jule is strong. She is athletic. She is resilient.
Imogen is charming. She is wealthy. She is enchanting.
Together Jule and Imogen could be the perfect pair. Or maybe that was never the plan. Whatever Imogen might think, Jule knows that they need each other.
But Jule has everything under control because she is smart. Jule is the one who will save the day, not some great white hetero action hero. Jule knows that she is the cente ...more

I never thought I would be disappointed in anything E. Lockhart wrote, but there is a first time for everything. This is basically "The Talented Mr. Ripley" for the YA crowd. And since Patricia Highsmith already wrote that, why did Ms. Lockhart feel the need to write it again? Disappointed.

A quick read that I'd recommend to people who enjoy stories with unlikeable characters. Page-turner, but I was never invested in the characters - just super curious to uncover the layers one at a time, back to how it started.

Even though I didn't watch Jennifer Garner's Alias, I kept thinking of it while reading. It did keep my attention, so it is going into the unfinished category.
