Oh, how I’d have loved this one at ages 9 and 10, and if my life had been slightly different at 11, 12, and 13 too, and even then I still would have loved it, as I do now. I didn’t like it as much as When You Reach Me, but since that made both my favorites and favorite-time-travel-books shelves, that isn’t surprising.

4 ½ stars

I almost gave it only 4 stars. I found one thing at the end great, though not surprising, but one other thing I found anti-climactic and, for me, almost boring, definitely

Wow. Wow-wow-wow. Rebecca Stead once again creates something amazing and unique: a book that is both modern and old-fashioned at the same time. WHEN YOU REACH ME made me feel like I was a kid again, discovering books for the first time like A WRINKLE IN TIME. LIAR & SPY gave much the same experience, and reminded me of HARRIET THE SPY or other New York kids books, but it's also very much it's own story. So brilliant! I just loved it so much! ...more

Stead has done it again. Pulls you in with great characters, throws in a twist you didn't see coming. Great middle grade fiction.

Georges and his family have just moved 6 blocks away to an apartment when his dad looses his job. Pretty much friendless at school, Georges gets drawn into a crazy spy club with a homeschooled kid named 'Sa

Nice contemporary story. Not as beloved as When You Reach Me. I think Stead might be known as a "twist ending" author and the twists were more forced than her last book which was like a perfect puzzle coming together. Still, lots to talk about and would be a good choice for a children's book club. ...more

Beautiful book. Book that captures all the ugliness of middle school with an admirable protagonist. Topics include sickness, steadfastness, individuality, and yeah just everything that makes for a good book.

An awful lot like When You Reach Me--the two feel very similar when you read them. I really liked the group of friends that Georges had in this book. I didn't really see any of the twists coming, but I would still say this book is good, not great. ...more
