Oh, how I’d have loved this one at ages 9 and 10, and if my life had been slightly different at 11, 12, and 13 too, and even then I still would have loved it, as I do now. I didn’t like it as much as When You Reach Me, but since that made both my favorites and favorite-time-travel-books shelves, that isn’t surprising.
4 ½ stars
I almost gave it only 4 stars. I found one thing at the end great, though not surprising, but one other thing I found anti-climactic and, for me, almost boring, definitely ...more

Wow. Wow-wow-wow. Rebecca Stead once again creates something amazing and unique: a book that is both modern and old-fashioned at the same time. WHEN YOU REACH ME made me feel like I was a kid again, discovering books for the first time like A WRINKLE IN TIME. LIAR & SPY gave much the same experience, and reminded me of HARRIET THE SPY or other New York kids books, but it's also very much it's own story. So brilliant! I just loved it so much!

Stead has done it again. Pulls you in with great characters, throws in a twist you didn't see coming. Great middle grade fiction.

If that isn't enough to contend with, Georges finds himself the target of the class bully and this is middle school, so not exactly the best years of anyone's life. Pretty much friendless at school, Georges gets drawn into a crazy spy club with a homeschooled kid named 'Sa ...more

Nice contemporary story. Not as beloved as When You Reach Me. I think Stead might be known as a "twist ending" author and the twists were more forced than her last book which was like a perfect puzzle coming together. Still, lots to talk about and would be a good choice for a children's book club.

3.5 stars.

An awful lot like When You Reach Me--the two feel very similar when you read them. I really liked the group of friends that Georges had in this book. I didn't really see any of the twists coming, but I would still say this book is good, not great.
