I really enjoyed this debut fantasy. Strong, fierce female character, Kelsea, who inherits a throne about which she knows nothing. Once she learns of the evil pact her mother, the previous Queen, who she never met, made with the Red Queen she rapidly begins punching holes in the evil deal. As another reviewer said, it's nice to read a fantasy with a strong female lead that doesn't involve a romance. There are hints of things to come and I am excited for the next book! ...more

3.5 stars. It was actually a lot better than I was expecting from the blurbs! It has a depth that so many of the similar-sounding YA books are missing. The inner voice of the heroine was convincing and engaging, and made her very relatable.

When we meet our heroine, Kelsea Raleigh, it’s her 19th birthday and she’s perched high in a tree watching a troop of armed soldiers approach her home. From her safe foster home where she’s been hidden since she was a child, these soldiers are to take her to the capital where she is to take her rightful place as Queen of the Tear, as long as she isn’t killed by her rivals along the way.
