Taylor is driving to Arizona and while she is stopped at a gas station, a Native American woman gives her a little girl and asks her to take her away so she will have a chance to survive-pretty unrealistic, but still good. Taylor discovers that the girl, who she calles Turtle since she clings on so tightly has been badly abused and does not talk even though she is 3. The book goes on to tell the story of the life they build together and the friends the make in Arizona.
