Mama Day is in a large part a book of contrasts: first person narratives from male and female perspectives, life in the city in contrast to life in the country, true traditions in contrast to their capitalist corruptions, etc. The plot is a simple romance - they marry and eventually she takes him back to her country island home. I enjoyed how spot-on Naylor gets how sometimes people are really stupid in their interactions with each other. I also enjoyed the voodoo magical realism and the feeling
