I rated this novella three stars the first time I read it, because while the concept, themes, and writing were outstanding, I felt like the plot was missing something for it happening so quickly. I still feel that way about the book, but, having read the next four books in the series and seeing everyone's stories being fleshed out and expanded, I realize how much McGuire had in mind when she started the series. Jack and Jill's story, told in the next book, is heavily foreshadowed here, as are Su ...more

Most of us feel nostalgia for our younger selves, but how much stronger would that nostalgia be if our younger selves were able to go to places like Narnia or Oz or Wonderland? How would we feel later, when we returned to the boring drudgery of the real world? Would we wish to return? Would we never look back? How would we adjust to real life once again? Seanan McGuire examines those very questions with Every Heart a Doorway.

First things first: McGuire is an outstanding writer. Her turns of phra

A really charming and fun premise. I appreciated how the author was able to mix together a bunch of different imaginary worlds ("I killed the Goblin King!" "I served the Lord of the Dead." etc.). it created a fun genre-mixing. I also liked how the characters inhabited a bunch of different sexualities and gender identities, and these were addressed clearly without being the main thing the book was about. The ending was abrupt and not really earned. The book could've actually been longer. ...more

I like the concept of children finding portals into lands fantastic, much like Alice did Wonderland, with each land different from the other as each child is unique. I just couldn't connect with any of the characters; I need more story, and I found out that this series is currently at 5(!) books, but not one of them features Kade, who I'm most curious about. To me the book failed to live up to the hype (Hugo, Nebula,

I was surprised how much I liked this book. One of the few times when the book fulfills the promise set by the really cool premise. Ace representation and gender respect. A bit of familiarity with each of the girls coming from different worlds, but it was interesting and well told in a new way. The plotline both did and didn't go the way I was expecting (hoping) it to, and I'm definitely hooked for more in this series. ...more

Premise is great! Magical worlds everywhere!
However, the author did not do enough world building for the actual school in which most of the action takes place. So that was lame and boring.
