This was fantastic. A poignant book about growing up black in Great Depression Alabama, under the specter of the KKK. Stella is a precocious narrator who despite having a good life with a loving family and good friends, has to come to terms with the injustice that she and others have to face in the world by virtue of their darker skin.

There were a lot of great things about this book - the depiction of family and culture, a part of black history that isn't covered in chapter books as often as others, with a presentation appropriate to the age group, a great depiction of learning to write and struggling with something you want to do that doesn't come easily.
