Interesting. Each of the books in the Giver series has been rich and strange, deceptively simple, and heartbreaking. This was no exception. I both love and hate that Jonas is a grown man that we barely know in this book, since I have such a literary crush on him. Hate because, Yay, Jonas! Love because he's really not the kind of character who would benefit from having their every move detailed in a book. It's better that he's a man of mystery now. This was a great book, but the ending was just t ...more

Matty, who we first met in Gathering Blue, lives a peaceful life in Village with the Seer, Kira's father. He has developed the gift of healing but keeps it secret, instead hoping that his true name will be Messenger. True names are given by Leader, who we first met as Jonas in The Giver. Slowly, Matty and Seer begin to realize that something is wrong in Village and growing more wrong, until Matty must leave on a journey through the treacherous Forest to find Kira.

I'm sure this shows how much I'm missing the point, but I kept waiting an explanation to make sense of this world, and ended up very disappointed when I never got it. ...more

Very disappointed that the conclusion to "The Giver" turned out to be just another tired Christian allegory. ...more

Far be it from me to question Ms. Lowry, but the pacing of this book seemed very awkward. Everyday life, everyday life, something might be wrong with the forest, people are acting weird, is it puberty or a superpower?, a journey!, badness!, oh noes!... and with 5 pages left, hope!resolution!sadness! ENDING.

So: why didn't I get any answers about who or what is behind the Trade Mart, and how it works? That's the book I want to read.

In sum: Matty was more fun as Fiercest of the Fierce in Gathering

The third and last book in The Giver 'series' (for want of better word) and unfortunately by far the weakest. Slow to start, and though it had a very interesting middle, the end came much too soon and was far too rushed. Worse, so many questions were left unanswered that the ending seemed both inadequate and unsatisfactory.

I still give it three stars because the middle was terrific - I just wish it had been elaborated on further.

What a sad book. I'm really glad I'm revisiting this series. Although some of it was a little heavy-handed, Lowry is such a gifted storyteller. ...more

I liked this book more than "Gathering Blue". It touches on themes including immigration, disability, metaphor vs. reality, and Faustian trades while also just being a great story to read. ...more

This is the last book of three. It brings The Giver and Gathering Blue together in a way that you expect but it's still surprising the way it happens. ...more
