Well realized and detailed world, clear characters, and a very visual style of storytelling - the thing played as a movie in my head. Character growth is somewhat limited but forgivable. But why do you want to read this book? The fight scenes. Seriously. They are so so so good. New mechanism and AND it makes fight scenes fantastic? Hell yes I'm in. The rest of the writing is plenty good enough for me to keep going. I like Sanderson's style - simple but very very very good for what it's shooting ...more

I would actually give this 3.5 stars if half stars were allowed. There was a lot of good stuff about this book. I did enjoy what was for me a new take on powers i.e. the burning of metals. The bad was the long-winded-ness of the author - I did skim through some of it.

Also it was pretty easy to figure out what 'power/s' the Lord Ruler had; but even so, it was a fun read. Not sure though I need to read the rest of the series.

I’m giving up on this after 175 pages of all table-setting, no progress. There was an 8-page fight scene(!) that was preceded by 4 pages of “and then he did this with magic and jumped here and then jumped there”, and at page 175 it’s looking like we’re dangerously close to an 80’s-style training montage. I feel like I’m watching a video game and I could even hear the generic music playing in my head during that 8-page, ridiculously over-detailed fight scene. I’m tapping out after staring at the ...more

Not overrated at all

I tried some of Sanderson’s SF and was not impressed. This is one of his most hyped series— I went in expecting to be let down.

I was not. Plot? Excellent. Foreshadowing? Excellent. Character development? Excellent. A light touch with romance, trust, emotions but without stripping characters of them? Yes. A compelling cast of supporting characters? Yes. Two MCs or opposite genders figuring out their relationship, and it doesn’t end up trite? Heck, yes.

Strongly recommend.

It took me longer than usual to get into this book because there are a lot of characters and remembering what powers/abilities everyone has took me awhile to get everything straight, so I could just enjoy the book. Now I can't wait to read the next one. I also really like the love story because it is really sweet and I love nerds! ...more

It took me a really long time to finish this book, wow. I liked it a lot! I think I also had to be in a Mood for it because it is a bit too much fantasy for me—but the world is cool, and I like the powers here. I also really like Vin. I think, though, that I am in need of Romance in most series now if the premise is a bit out of my comfort zone, and there wasn’t enough for me... but I will finish the trilogy!

(Clearing my 2017 currently reading list one book at a time.)

Definitely lots of action, a pleasing little romantic subplot, and lots of layers. As Kelsier says, "there's always another secret". Can't wait to get my next Audible credit and continue the series. ...more

I liked the magic system. The two main characters were pretty likeable.

It was just too long for what it is. The same story in half the pages would have been much better.

5✨'s

This book was exactly what I needed to read right now, it's phenomenal. I loved everything about it and can't believe that I didn't read it earlier in life. I enjoy Sanderson's writing style and his characterization skills. His fight scenes are amazing as well. I actually can't believe this hasn't been optioned for a movie. I think it would be a great one! I even got a bit misty eyed a few times near the end. 😭
