Pull of the Ocean won the Prix Sorcieres in France and the Batchelder here in the US (yearly prize given to best children's book translated into English) and I liked it...but I have a hard time imagining who I would recommend it to. I don't like use terms like "haunting" or "sparse" to describe books, but this book felt like it were made of mist. I'm currently writing this at the airport, so I'll make it brief.

Likes: Loves that it was written using different perspectives, from Yann's brothers to the social worker, to the cab driver and more. It showed some of the same scenes from different POV, adding to the humor and light hearted-ness of the book.

Hates: didn't get the ending at all.

I think I'll read this again.

This was an strange story of 7 brothers who decided to run away from home, led by the youngest one, a dwarf. I enjoyed the way the book was written, from alternating viewpoints of the various characters. However, I was disappointed by the ending, which didn't make sense to me, primarily because the author never reveals the dwarf brother's motives. This book won a prize in France, where it was originally published. I can't say as I strongly recommend it, but it's an interesting story. ...more
