I read "Random Family" several years ago, but while I was scrolling through my book list it caught my eye and got me thinking about it once again. I can't recall why I didn't write a comprehensive review at the time (maybe I read it before I joined GoodReads?), but I didn't. LeBlanc spent years interviewing a group of young women from the Bronx, experiencing their tragedies and (few) triumphs. Ridiculously well-written, feels like fiction, but sadly, it's all real.

As far as journalism goes, this book is fantastic. The writer spent years with a poor Puerto Rican family in the Bronx, so you know you aren't getting just a stereotyping snapshot of their lives. It's infuriating sometimes when the people make bad decisions, but that's only b/c LeBlanc makes them as so real and multi-dimensional that you empathize. It shows that poverty is such a hard cycle to break and that whatever the gvt. is doing now is not really working.
