*sigh* I dunno. Anne Tyler and I just don't get along that well. I mean, she's nice and all, and it's not a horrible way to spend time, but ... she's just not my favorite writer. Her writing and stories are fine, just not great for me. But then I read reviews of her books, and the reviewers just LOVE her works, so I read that one, thinking maybe this one will be better than the others I've read, but no, it's still just okay, like the rest. I think her books are ones that I wouldn't mind reading

Anne Tyler is a wonderful writer, but I can't read too many of her books at once because I tend to get so depressed. True-to-life pictures of humans drawn with a kind and compassionate hand, but dear me! Sometimes I just need a little hope--a little "happily ever after." The one-sided battle between the older brother and the younger just made me unbearably sad.

Ugh. I’m a Tyler fan, but this book was a slog for me. Horrible people, nothing happening, nothing I felt good about at the end.
3.5 - Like a sad song - beautifully written, its melancholy lingers
I didn't love this book or hate it. I didn't care for the style of writing, going back and forth from past to present. Interesting characters but I don't think you really got to know each one.

I kept thinking it would get better. Not a one of the characters in this story appealed to me at all. But it was good enough to keep reading.
