Disappointing. Rather than discovering a world torn apart by zombies, I was treated to a first class tour of Mary's neuroses. She's afraid! She's lonely! She hates herself! She hates everyone else! She loves Travis! If only she could have Travis! But Travis isn't enough! And always, harping in the background of every other page is her talisman for escape, The Ocean! The Ocean! The Ocean!

Mary lives in a village surrounded by fences to keep out the Unconsecrated, who you and I know more familiarly as zombies. The village is ruled by the Sisterhood, who know things about the world and how it got that way that they're not telling anyone. Not the village, not Mary, and not the reader, either.

I love post-apocalyptic books, but I'm not a fan of zombies, so this one was just fair for me. In addition, I found Mary's choices selfish and annoying (especially as they resulted in the death of her brother?!) - um, CLEARLY Travis was never going to come for her (his late-stage rationale was silly) and Harry was awesome (he brought her a dog! He saved Jacob!).
Trying to decide if I liked it well enough to read on in the trilogy.
