A heart-breaking work of great beauty. Williams delves into the conflicted heart of a young girl, raised in a strict polygamous sect, who is trying to break free. She is bound to marry her 60-year-old uncle in a matter of weeks, something that she would rather die than do. But if she defies the church, what will the consequences be for her family? And if she leaves it all behind, will she ever see anyone she loves again?
Gripping from the first page, beautifully written, piercing.

Kyra has lived with the Chosen Ones her whole life. The oldest daughter of her father's third wife, 14-year-old Kyra enjoys her family and playing the piano, as well as a few activities her community believes are sins: reading and kissing a boy named Joshua. When the Prophet visits her family's trailer, she wonders if they've discovered these sins. Instead, the Prophet reveals that he has had a vision of Kyra marrying her uncle, who already has 6 other wives and is about 50 years older than she

What is it with the polygamist Mormon theme? Is it because of "Big Love"? This is the third book (The 19th Wife and Latter-Day Cipher being the other two) that explore that realm.
First of all, this is not an easy read - much like Sold is not an easy read. And because it takes place in America there's not that comfort level of thinking it's about another, completely foreign culture. We know that there are these groups, we know that this sort of life does happen.

I'm all jumbled about this one, and it's not the book's fault.
It's a quick and gripping read, with some truly disturbing moments (this is one of those books that I would only recommend to older teens). The fact that Meg Cabot is quoted on the front cover of the version I read struck me as a little misleading - when I think Meg Cabot, I think fun, energetic, seriously funny books, and this one is none of those things.
That said, this one is only getting a 3. It seems like this is definitely the ki ...more

Before visiting southern Utah several years ago, I read Jon Krakauer's Under The Banner of Heaven, which is about the FLDS church. Williams creatively took the facts to develop a the character of, Kyra, a young girl who was born into such a community. The author, moreover, carefully and sensitively writes about Kyra's struggle between escaping a life of hardships with a cruel possible spouse and wanting to remain with her loving family.

This was a really quick read.
That being said, I found it difficult to get through some of the passages due to the violence against children. I'm not sure if I actually liked this book, especially the ending. It was too much up in the air for me without any real closure. The nook edition was only 119 pages and it just felt more like a short story than a novel. I would have liked more. ...more
