I really enjoyed reading this, but it never felt particularly "special" so I can't give it a super high rating.

The bones of the story are very familiar: young woman (in this case a 15 year old girl, Neryn) alone in the world (because all her family has died) travels a lonely path, avoiding attention of authorities (because she has "canny," or magical, abilities, she can see the fairy folk, and the king has forbidden magic in Alban); she crosses paths with a mysterious stranger (Flint, who is th

In the land of Alban, a tyrant rules the people. Neryn is alone and on the run, seeking a mythical place where she might be free from persecution. Her journey is full of peril, and she is unsure who she can trust...

This was a great start to a teen fantasy series. I was intrigued and pulled in to the world Marillier created, and I enjoyed the main character even though she's not the strongest person I've ever read about. She had something captivating about her that made me root for her. I want to

This was such a good fantasy - exactly what I had been itching to read! It was a bit slow in some parts, but I enjoyed the writing so much and there were so many moments that made me want to sink into the story and read until I finished. I really loved the characters too and I'm so excited to find out what happens to them. I want more Neryn/Flint now! ...more

2.5 stars. I do enjoy this author but this one was a little formulaic and repetitive.

I love Juliet Marillier's writing, and this is no exception. This one is a bit different from some of her others, because it is both YA and on a bit of a slow burn, plot-wise. I tend to think of Marillier's books as being a little denser in their plotting, especially the more stand-alone YA books. In this book, the slower pace means that you really get inside the main characters' heads and understand what makes them tick. I'll be interested to see how their story progresses in the sequel. ...more

Unexpected treasure

Strong female protagonist, and not strong in the sword-and-fighting strong, but in a compassionate, empathetic, focused-on-her-purpose kind of way. I loved the story, which being a road trip, has a number of the typical pitfalls of a road trip. That said, most steps and progress were logical and character driven, and I loved the pacing and the slow reveal of information. Would certainly recommend and will now find the next in series pronto.

The pace is a bit leisurely (made worse by me trying to read this as my work-break book, which makes it go super slowly) but I enjoyed the fantasy world and characters - a solid set-up.
