Surprisingly good gothic historical fiction. Although targeted at young adults, this one will resonate with adults who enjoy literary fantasy and dark fairy tales. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and am passing it on with enthusiasm to several friends who are like-minded readers.

The main character was a bit naive throughout the story, but very much acted like a 15-year-old girl. The setting was a bit unexpected, but it worked well. A good start to a series with a very open ending.
