Another overly hyped book that left me feeling "meh". Maybe it was because the two voices (Alma and Leo) sounded so much alike. Yes, Alma "spoke" in lists, and part of her story was also Bird's voice, but the way in which both (all three?) used language was too similar. As someone who has lived in/near NYC for the past 30 years, I was also confused as to how any resident of Brooklyn - as Ms. Krauss is - could say that to get from Manhattan to Long Island you need to go through Yonkers!

This is one of those books that I would have once called "literary" in a condescending tone, just because I could not understand the point. I mean, I saw the themes and the ideas, but the book didn't make me understand why they were ideas worth thinking about.

Wow, very nice piece, albeit very confusing for 95% of the way. Fortunately Krauss is a fine writer and I was interested in the characters (and in finding out what the hey was going on!). I wanted a little more closure for Alma's brother, and I wanted the Zvi character to STOP SAYING "And yet." Otherwise, I actually kind of want to reread it. Some reviewers disliked the book-within-the-book (also called The History of Love), but while it is basically romantic intellectual garbage, I still found

There are more than two stories, and you see them through the eyes of more than three persons in the novel. My melancholic side will say, "With love, you can do anything."
