Choices for Valorian women are limited. Kestrel can join the military, as her father the general has planned for Kestrel since her childhood, or she can marry. No one would ever guess the path Kestrel truly wants to take. No one could imagine another choice in an empire that glorifies war and enslaves all it conquers.

Kestral is nearly an adult and it's time for her to make adult decisions. Her father is a general who conquered the city they now live in; he thinks she should join the military. Because so many of my friends had raved about The Winner’s Curse, I had pretty high expectations going in. Even with my high expectations, I was still enchanted by everything about The Winner’s Curse.

This book is so much better than I expected. I like the author, but still, I expected this to be the usual trite boy and girl are soul mates and their love defies their parents' wishes and they kiss while the city burns. And yeah okay there WAS a kiss while a city burned, but it wasn't trite. Such a delight!!

The description made me super skeptical (she must pick marriage or battle), but the actual story and world is fun. And i love just the STRATEGY and intelligence of Kestral.

I didn't mind the setting, but the chapters continually alternating between Arin and Kestrel got a bit annoying. The world building was a little slight, possibly because this world mimics others we've been in so the author might not have felt as though there was a lot of world building necessary. The best part was that what appeared at first to be possib
