The prose is on the heavy-handed side, but not terrible for a first novel by someone whose background is in science rather than letters. Interesting enough story that I'm willing to pick up the next book in the series.

I decided to read the Temperance Brennan books after watching the television show Bones. The two are similar but also very different, I enjoy both. Kathy Reichs has a very detailed but still interesting writing style. I do not understand all of the technical jargon but that does not detract from my reading enjoyment. Tempe and Ryan are great characters and my favorite parts of the books are when they are in a scene together especially if it is out in "the field". ...more

Like many others, I picked this up because I've started watching Bones, and enjoy the TV show. Problem is, I enjoy the show because of its humor. Unfortunately, that humor is completely absent from this book, replaced instead by very graphic violence, overly descriptive skim-worthy procedural passages, and a main character who seems to do every single "don't do it!" thing from horror movies. Good, and I don't know if it came before or after Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta books, but I found it to be not quite as good as the first four or so in that series (they are SO bad now as to be almost unreadable.) I don't think I'll go on with the series....too many other books to read and we've trod this ground so many times before (and will ...more

Just not as good as Bones -- one of the few situations where I really prefer the show to the book.

Fantastic book. I've read a few of the others in the series and enjoyed them as well. There was a little too much technical detail for my taste, but overall very good. I particularly liked that there wasn't pages of backstory to wade through. We were given enough to know what was going on, but not so much that the story came to a halt. ...more
