This was an amazing book. Iris Lockhart gets a phone call telling her that her great aunt Esme Lennox is being released from Cauldstone Hospital, a mental hospital. Iris never knew Esme existed. Her grandmother insisted that she was an only child. This book had me totally sucked in. I listened to the audio and found myself trying to listen to it every chance I had.
Iris gets a call one day saying that her great aunt Esme (who she never knew existed) is about to be released after 60 years in a mental hospital and that Iris is listed as the next of kin. Through a series of flashbacks told by Esme and her older sister Kitty who now has Alzheimer's as well as the present day story told by Iris, we learn about the events that led 16 year old Es ...more

Great characters, good mystery. I had an inkling early on I knew what was going to be true, but being right didn't spoil the experience. I especially liked the author's use of befuddled, almost stream-of-consciousness when switching to Kitty's POV.
