An amazing book! This is Laini Taylor's debut novel, and she has created a world that I would love to live in. In fact, I'm jealous that I didn't think of it. Her faeries are tiny and insect winged, all that you'd imagine, and yet more. A rich society, living parallel to ours, and struggling to protect the world from dark forces like the Blackbringer. Magpie is a great characters . . . actually, all her characters are great: real and believable, yet magical at the same time. Can't wait for the s ...more

A pleasantly complex fantasy world, a big cast of characters, nice rich language, and a fabulous audio version - what's not to like? I'd be curious how this comes across on the page, because the reading was so perfect - especially if you like a nice Scottish accent. Actually, the only flaw was that sometimes I got so distracted by the voice that I forgot to pay attention to the plot and lost track of what was going on. A tidy ending, but I'm looking forward to another story set in this world. Th ...more

Wow, this book was so good! The concepts were intriguing, and well played. I know that there's a series in mind for these books, but this could quite easily stand alone. The characters were fantastic, the plot amazing. All in all, an awesome book! Also, the fairies are not pink and create stupid magic. They hunt devils for Pete's sake! Warrior fairies are always cool. ...more

"read" the audio version. Great audio. Took a couple chapters to hook me, but really enjoyed the story and developed an affection for the characters. Intriguing warrior faery history. Want to read the rest of the series to hopefully meet Magpie's parents. ...more

Cute, and looks like the series is going to be about 6 or 7 books long. The dialogue is written with sort of an accent, all "ach!" and "aye" and "lassie" and "lad." ...more

Fairies just aren't my cup of tea. And when the fairies are Thumbalina-size, I can't help picturing the action happening as a low-budget '80s animated movie. But Laini Taylor being such a great writer did help me enjoy this. ...more

I'm quite fond of crows, so I was pleased to find that several main characters were crows, but that wasn't enough to hold my interest. This might be a good book to read aloud to younger kids. Maybe. ...more

This was amazing. I resisted reading it for a long time because fairies seem very twee. But it was NOT twee at all. The fairies were cool, rather than precious, and the villains were scary.

It started slow. I nearly gave up on it a couple of times. But it picks up eventually and has a satisfactory ending.
