I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M GIVING THIS BOOK FOUR STARS. (In summary: DELIGHTFUL so-bad-it's-good GARBAGE.)

Context for why I'm being a lot more generous than usual: after Mercy Thompson (and as I crawl my way to the end of Cry Wolf), I was left unfulfilled and in need of something smutty and easy to read. I didn't really want PWP, but I was already so bored of plot that it didn't matter. This book was the right book at the right time.

I mean, it takes place over a week, so with a HEA in place, you could I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M GIVING THIS BOOK FOUR STARS. (In summary: DELIGHTFUL so-bad-it's-good GARBAGE.)

I mean, it takes place over a week, so with a HEA in place, you could guess that the DRAGON (!!!!!) and UNICORN (!!!!!!!!!) laid eyes on each other and promptly hooked up, that of course character, plot, world development are all seriously lacking, but even for all of the holes in everything and the ridiculous pacing, this was the first paranormal alpha-blah-blah-macho-dominant dude, alpha-in-her-own-way-but-ultimately-submits lady book I've read in a long time that is CONSISTENTLY all about saying how awful, creepy, and gross as hell his behavior is and has the female character call him out appropriately on it. Until the usual kind of sex happens and distracts the heroine. (Magical penises.)

Is it perfect? No. But it actually confronts a LOT of normally accepted awful, abusive, rape-culture-spun-romantic behaviors that books I've read recently have simply accepted, which is NOOOOT OKAY. Are there things I wish were pushed further? Yes! Was the extent of the consistency in confronting it limited to an introductory class on rape culture? Definitely yes! Was the relationship in the end something I dig? Nope! That dominant alpha male trope wins in the end in all the boring, gross, predictable ways.

But this was such a vast improvement over the shit I've seen lately that honestly, I'm impressed far more than I should be, to the point that I see it as a promising start to the series.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M GOING TO READ THE SERIES.

(The book was also funny? I remember laughing out loud several times while reading, hence the "delightful" in "delightful garbage.")

Also, I know that Pia's form is technically a spoiler, but like........ I saw the unicorn thing from a mile away. Like, WHAT IS MORE SPECIAL THAN A FRICKING DRAGON. ...more

Inevitable magic mate bonds are two way

... and I’ll give this series that the characters even out what they bring, despite the fact that their power is so dramatically different. I liked. I liked even more that it wasn’t a Stockholm situation.
