I would give 4 stars for the parts about the elephants, but considerably less to the human storyline. In the afterward Picoult told about the research she did on elephants in order to write the book. I found this fascinating. I have to say that she is an excellent storyteller and I did enjoy listening to the book for the most part. However, the psychic element she introduced was too bizarre for my liking.

At first, I was listening to this book. I quickly learned I was doing the book a disservice, reading it this way. I felt lost in the characters. We have Jenna, a smart, independent 13 year old, hell bent on finding her mother. Serenity, a psychic trying to regain her lost powers, was there to help Jenna on her journey. Jenna has Alice's journals about her life in Botswana and New Hampshire, observing and saving elephants. The hapless alcoholic former detective Virgil also plays a role. Each chap
