This was on my t0-read list ever since I saw the first ad for it and it was definitely an above-average dystopian teen book, but I didn't find myself wanting to read further....and it looks like there are probably at least four-five more in the series.
Sloane's brother committed suicide, joining a number of teens doing the same. "The Program" was established to prevent such suicides by, openly, wiping the memories of suicidal teams, and apparently that's A-OK with their families and society in g ...more

I found the first 20% or so of this book extremely slow and boring. I'm glad I stuck with it, though.
In a world where teenagers are committing suicide at epidemic proportions, The Program is here to save everyone. But the only way to save someone from committing suicide is to wipe their memories. After six weeks of treatment, the treated are referred to as Returners and are reintroduced to society. Imagine being reintroduced to your own life, but without many of the memories that define who you ...more

This book is an example of why YA lit has such a bad reputation in literary circles. The characters are stereotypes, the writing is simplistic, and the plot is racing from incident to incident, without any major developments.
So far, the main character, Sloane is trying to keep from showing her grief as she tries to go through her days as a normal teenager, attending science class and making out with her boyfriend. However, the problem is that there is an epidemic of suicide across the globe, and ...more

Not a bad---or a badly written---book, but nothing in it grabbed me. I didn't identify with any of the characters or their situations, and the dystopian element read more like a preachy thought experiment than a thorough exploration of a world terrified by its own suiciding youth. (Though I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to think treatment of depression is a good or a bad idea. So...I guess it was preachy without picking a specific pulpit to expound from?)

This just did nothing for me. Saying no one knows why something is happening doesn't count as world building. The premise is so thin. And why do I even care about Sloane and James when James is always a creep? Love triangles are fine but not when I don't care about one of the characters at all. Thin premise, flat characters and total lack of world building made this a fail.

I just could not with this book. One disc and I was done. Creepily overprotective (and easy to see th epathology that would lead to him being abusive) boyfriend, insanely melodramatic cliched terms at every turn, and a compelling premise (I really wanted it to be a dysopian sequel to Heathers) that fell flat very soon. Also, the reader was pretty dull and was a little too much with the aspirating of Hs in WH words. Meh meh meh.

3.5
Some of this was pretty predictable, but its a pretty enjoyable book. I wasn't surprised the author is a high school English teacher, because she writes teen dialog really well. And wtf, implied oral sex?! O.o ...more
