Marjorie lives an isolated life with her parents, until at sixteen they send her out to get a full-time job to bring in some money for them (since neither of them work). She stumbles into work with a man named Sands who's new in town. Though at home Marjorie struggles with her parents who are part of a harsh religion, and at school she's ridiculed for her strange speech pattern, the time she spends on the building site with Sands helps her learn about her self-worth and resilience.

Roland Merullo is an incredibly talented writer - his characters are so compelling. I had picked this book up as part of a display at my local library, and read the whole thing without taking note of the author, who also wrote another favorite book (In Revere, In Those Days.) The two books couldn't be more dissimilar in plot, and yet shared the same readability. Clearly, I now need to seek out and read every book Roland Merullo has written. ...more

Deep truths in this one. Male author writes a very convincing teenage girl. Loved the parallel of healing and building.
