Mira decides, a few days before her 16th birthday, to run away from the home where she lives with her two godmothers, to the Vegas-like city of Beau Rivage. Her reason for running away is to find the graves of her parents - her godmothers had always forbade her to go to the city. They also forbade her from using razors or any other sharp object, among a number of other restrictions.

In a casino named Dream, Mira tries to sleep in the lobby, but is met with two boys: Blue, a spiky-haired punk who Mira decides, a few days before her 16th birthday, to run away from the home where she lives with her two godmothers, to the Vegas-like city of Beau Rivage. Mira gets pissed at Blue and leaves, only to run into Blue's brother Felix, a suave romantic and the owner of the Dream. Felix gives Mira her own room and Mira finds herself quickly falling for him.

But Beau Rivage is full of secrets. It seems that most born there have been cursed to play roles in various fairy tales. Mira discovers that she is a Sleeping Beauty, and Freddie is her prince - and yet she is drawn dangerously toward Felix, and she's beginning to develop feelings for Blue as well. The brothers share the same curse, and Mira must discover what their curses are before her own curse comes into play.

I feel like most of my issues with this book came from the narrator of the audiobook. She had this very high-pitched, breathy way of reading that made me think of Mira as an idiot. Mira did have some spunk and I enjoyed her fighting/flirtation with Blue, but there were times while listening that I was like, "Hello? Maybe you could try to figure out how to break his curse?" or "Maybe you should stop kissing a guy that seems to suck your life out of you?" I suppose it wasn't totally her fault that she continued to like Felix despite his curse, but at a certain point she really seemed to be deluding herself that he was a good guy.

The various fairy tales were pretty cool. If I hadn't recently read Lies, Knives, and Girls in Red Dresses, I wouldn't have even known about the fairy tale with the sisters who had jewels or toads come out of their mouths when they spoke, or the curse the Felix and Blue had.

The ending was fairy tale-esque, where the major characters got what they wanted, without any thoughts about the evil stepsisters. Here Mira totally disregards how Freddie might feel, and it's never brought up as an issue. I also wondered what happened to Felix, because his curse wasn't completed. Then there was the whole matter of Mira's parents. So yeah, the ending was nice and pretty much what I was hoping for in terms of the romantic side of things, but there were certainly loose ends for almost every other subplot in the book. ...more

I don't want to read this. It seems interesting enough but the blatant nods to Disney versions of fairy tales was grating and very OUAT. Also cannot, will not ever be okay with a 15yo and a 22yo being even remotely considered as a couple. For more thoughts The Book Smugglers say it all and better than me. ...more
