For years my sister-in-law and my friend have been telling me I HAD to read this book, both ranking it among their favorite books ever. In the end, I really enjoyed the story but wouldn't call it my favorite ever.

Seeing as how I have a mild obsession with names, it's not surprising that I was fascinated by the role of names in the story. But this isn't one of those stories where you're sick of some little thing being a big issue - it factors into the story in what feels very realistic, the way we look back at little things in our lives and wonder how things would be different without them. Follows the lives of one family of immigrants. I enjoyed the book and connected with many of the struggles and sentiments of the characters. Even though the main character is the son, Gogol, I thought that the story was strongest when dealing with the parents. They fascinated me more than the children. Overall, a good story.

I only gave it 4 stars because I think the book raced through Gogol/Nikhil's life a little too fast for us to get to know him. But I liked seeing how his relationship to his heritage changed, and the different ways he chose to acknowledge or not acknowledge who he was. ...more
