The assimilation into a foreign culture, as written by Lahiri, is seamless and at once tortured and difficult for first generation Hyphened-Americans. The story was one that I identified with completely. Reading found me constantly seeing tangible replicas of loved one as I meandered through the pages. A great read.

I liked this book. It was a character sketch, mainly about a son and his parents. It wasn't action-packed, by any means, but I enjoyed the subtleness of the story and the quiet poetry of the author.

I just read this for the second time and enjoyed it just as much as the first. It's a terrific book on so many levels. Lahiri has a gift of choosing words so perfectly as to make the reader feel the emotions she wants them to feel. It's a story of a pair of Bengali Indian immigrants in an arranged marriage, and their children, particularly their eldest, a son they named Gogol.
