I first read this book when I was ten or so, and everything from the stark subject matter to the way the protagonist's story was interspersed with the clinical reports made an impression on me. I haven't read it in years; I should pick it up again and see how I react to it now that I'm ancient and not-so-sheltered.

I read this in junior high but don't think I ever finished it. When I read it a few years ago I was totally surprised by the plot twist at the end so I must not have finished it. A boy sets out on his bike to find his father and realizes that nothing in his life is as it seems.

This was the first book I ever read in one sitting. I couldn't believe the ending, and was mad when I went to school the next day and of course no one had read past the assignment. It's a mind-blower, and possibly the reason I am a children's book editor today.
