Mr. Tremblay manages to script a slightly unconventional take on the modern horror story. However, a few drawbacks exist, keeping the novel from being a true classic as opposed to a clever tale. Typos and omissions (sometimes at key points) persist, and momentum does not feel particularly strong until at least the ninth chapter. It's *almost* September so it's time to get my horror on. I'm so glad last year's streak involved lots of Shirley Jackson because there's a lot of Shirley going on here. To be fair, there's a lot of William Peter Blatty, Stephen King, and other horror favorites to uncover. Tremblay gleefully shares the book's influences, from Paranormal Activity to Session 9. Horror fans of all stripes will love what he's created. You like jump scares? We've got jump scares. You like psychological horror? I do!

This book was genuinely creepy--I was pretty scared during the young Merry recollections. I found the layers of the story an interesting concept; the blog from an older POV kept me guessing as to what was real and what was not, though the writer of the blog annoyed me with her "Look at me! I'm so clever" posts. This was fantastic! It twists and turns and leaves you unsure of exactly what happened to the Barret family. It's reminiscent of great horror such as [i]The Excorcist[/i] and [i]We Have Always Lived In The Castle[/i].
