I loved this book so hard. Because I loved the characters. I loved Sam, and his best friend Ramon, and their adorable friend Brooke, who is helping them to "break" Frank, the new employee at Plumpy's Burgers. I loved Sam's family, ALL of them, and I was actually sad when I realized that his stepdad was dead. (He was such a great guy in that flashback!) Lish McBride has a true gift for characters, and I am so excited that this looks like it's the first in a series, because I need some more Sam!

This is absolutely light, fast-paced urban fantasy/horror, and I enjoyed the book and the characters, even if the worldbuilding was, shall we say, very familiar. But I’m deducting a full star for the worst refrigerated woman ever. (view spoiler)

sam is a nineteen year old college dropout working a dead-end fast food gig and coasting through life. a chance meeting with the local area's big baddie tips sam off that he's not a regular guy and opens the whole supernatural world up to him.

No book should ever make you hear Elton John every time you look at the cover. Just sayin'.
Anyway, this book was really interesting, if a little chaotic. Sam (short for Samhain) is a college drop-out, flipping burgers at Pudgy's and hanging out with Brooke, Frank and Ramon. One day they get on the wrong side of a guy (they broke his taillight during a game of potato lacrosse) and, well, it gets complicated from there. There are necromancers, witches, fey hounds, werewolves, Harbingers, Ed and a ...more

I wanted to like this book, but it just wasn't for me. I think it would be a good fit for some of my teens.
Goodreads Reviewer Nicole (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...), sums up my thoughts here:
"Let me explain. I lived and breathed for The Darkest Powers trilogy last spring. Why? Because of the relationship between the necromancer and the werewolf. It was well-written. It was set up in a way that you felt something for the characters. They weren't just locked in a cage for the sake of ha ...more

I think I would have liked this better as an audiobook since the book's narrator has such a distinctive voice. I probably missed a LOT (if not most) of the humor since I probably read it too fast. It was an OK book and would make a good movie since it had a lot of action and suspense. I think it would appeal to all teens who enjoy a good adventure story with supernatural bad guys and a main character who didn't realize he was a necromancer since his mother had bound his powers when he was young.

A solid 3 stars. I liked the voice, the writing was funny, likeable characters. I wanted to enjoy it more, but I have this issue now where every book has to have werewolves and I'm just sort of werefatigued. I also felt like there was a lot of 90s nostalgia, like the author and me both went to high school in the same place and era, and it shone through making the characters more like 30 something hipsters than teens/young twenties. This one leans towards adult as the main character is out of hig

This is a funny not "scary" novel. I liked the voice of the main character. This would be more for a high school crowd.

Super funny, fun urban fantasy in the same category as the Iron Druid series. Can't wait to read the next one.
