Number Four is an alien who has been living on Earth for the past 10 years, ever since his home planet of Lorien was destroyed by the Mogadorians. He is one of 9 Lorien children protected by a charm - the Mogadorians must kill the 9 children in order or the child cannot be harmed. Unfortunately for Number Four, he just got the burn-like scar on his ankle indicating that Number Three has been killed. He is next.

With his guardian Henri, Number Four (now known as John Smith) arrive in a small town

An interesting enough premise, but the execution was somewhat lacking. The romance between Four and Sarah was very tepid- they were those typical instant soul mates with no interesting struggles. Not all the relationships were so bland though- I did kind of like some of them, like Four and his guardian Henri, and then the dog especially (Sam was a good sidekick too and Mark's redemption was an unanticipated and refreshing development). For some reason I found the last section of the book, the cl ...more

My brother gave me 3 books for Christmas. I gave him nothing. Does that make me a jerk?

This is one of the three that he gave me. The other two are Super-human and The Enemy. I wasn't sure which one I should read first, as I'd never heard of any of them. That to me is funny, because I pride myself on knowing the titles (at least) of the current hip books.

So, I'm way behind the times because this is being made into a movie due out in Feb. Seriously. We even started getting Entertainment Weekly. H

A student cam running in to the library to tell me about this book - we looked it up and I immediately purchased it. She was so excited... until she realized it was the first in a series. Now, she's not sure she'll read it.

As for my reading, I think the idea is good. Of course, it's vaguely like Superman, except John/Number 4 has a Lorian 'minder' to help him survive and the Mogodorians apparently arrived on Earth around the same time he did. The idea of being tied in to ninesix people, with you

Pretty terrible. The writing is stilted, the plot is full of holes. It's insanely derivative and unoriginal. There's so much better stuff out there - no one should be forced to resort to reading this. ...more

I felt like the writing in this was stiff. It read like a movie adaptation to me. Strong plot, not so developed characters. The students at school really like it!

Is there anything more pitiful than a lovesick teenage boy?

By the time I got to the end, I was kinda hoping John would get killed.

A quite enjoyable science fiction, with a very relateable main character. Even if he is an alien.

And just so readers know, there is quite a bit of casual swearing in the book, if that bothers you.
