This book was intense. It feels like it's very of its moment. I'm not sure this story would have been published at all if it was coming out now with the focus being on a heroine who takes a good portion o the book to process her own internalized racism. It's interesting but I think because of the violence and antisemitism (even if it is all interrogated and examined in the text) I would only recommend this one with a lot of caveats. ...more

Such a great premise, but the characters never quite came alive for me, and the writing felt a little stiff. I wanted to see how it would all resolve, but of course things are left hanging for the sequel, and I'm not quite that invested. Still, a fascinating look at 1930s Munich, which I don't know much about. ...more
