After heartily NOT enjoying a different Eva Ibbotson as a teenager, I unofficially swore off her books. But I kept seeing book reviewers and authors — people whose taste normally aligns with mine — praise her and talk about how lovely her books are. I couldn't get into this. I felt like I was being bounced along on top of the story instead of sinking down into it. There's too much tedious detail about too many characters; I never knew who Ibbotson was going to throw at me next and I didn't care about any of them. In short: too much telling, not enough showing.
