This is a comfort read for me. Lerris is exiled from Recluse (home of magicians who work in Order) for asking too many questions and being too unreliable. During his time in the outside world, he slowly realizes why Recluse is the way it is--and why he can never go back. Probably the best of the Recluse series.

Probably a 2.5 stars, but I'd rather err up. It was just so tedious from start to finish. I kept listening, expecting it to get better; and it just never did. I did like the premise for magic in the world Modesitt created, but the method of learning/teaching was ridiculous and not very intuitive. I almost did not finish this one. It was a very very sloooooooooowwww read for me.
I read it about a year ago and I only really remember 3 things out of this 500 page book.

3. I did enjoy the descriptions of the fine & detailed woodworking.
The magic and the characters never really came into clear focus for me. ...more

If I had first read this when I was, say, 15, I think I would have had a much stronger appreciation for it. The references to chaos and order made me think of Amber a bit. Also, as others have noted, the onomatopoeia was a bit much.
