So it turns out I don't really like Augusten Burroughs as much as I thought I did. The shorter essays & articles I'd read by him lead me to expect a dry, quirky wit in this memoir. Instead it's just ... dry ... and boring. A kid obsesses about a heater. Maybe it gets better, but I just haven't been motivated to find out. Setting this one aside for now ...

This is the story of young Augusten, whose recently divorced mother makes him live with her therapist's family for his formative teenage years. The Finches are a strange lot and he and Dr. Finch's daughters are left largely to their own devices.
While if I thought deeply about some of the events, this might have been a tragic story, the memoir is told in a way that often made me laugh... or cringe in disgust. This is along the lines of something by David Sedaris, although a little less relatable ...more

I read this cover to cover on July 4th. (yay, America!) I really enjoyed Burrough's descriptions ("She was looking at this one spoon that had a reflection of the ceiling light in it. Almost like you could eat the light if you wanted to, like it was cereal."). I did feel, however, that two thirds in he felt rushed to end it, and the last third lacks the sparkle of the beginning. Which makes sense for a memoir, but oh well!
