This was my first Sarah Dessen book, and now I know why she's so popular.
Along for the Ride was smart, readable, and engaging. The promise of inevitable and somewhat predictable summer love pulled me in but it was Auden's family issues that kept me turning the page. My parents separated when I was 22, well on my way into adulthood, and I've rarely read anything that deals with divorce from an adult-child's perspective. Although she always uses realistic, contemporary settings, Sarah Dessen's stories sometimes seem to have a touch of fantasy to them. Part of me believes that these plots could actually happen, and part of me feels like they're fantastically unlikely - not that the issues are resolved in an unrealistic way, but each character serves a purpose in a fairly tidy way. Lest this sound overly critical, I always enjoy reading her stories, and they're satisfying and easy to recommend to teen girls. Altho
