When Rand spots a mysterious hooded figure following him on his way into the village, he doesn't imagine that soon he and his father will be attacked by Trollocs. Suddenly Rand is running for his life, armed with a heron-crested sword his father gave him, alongside his two childhood friends Mat and Perrin, and a village girl, Egwene. Meh! Let me preface by saying "I have not read any of the LOTR books. My experience in this genre of books is limited to the frist two GOT books. I found this book to be semi interesting at times, but overall it lacked any real adventure. There is constant mention of Trollocs and Myrddraal as being the danger the main characters are running from, but anytime they are attacked, they seem to slip away without much fight or injury. Anytime I new danger is introduced, the author presents it as an in

oh, mr. jordan, how far you have fallen.
the first 3 books of this series are intricate, fascinating, and full of breath-taking tableaus. what happened? from the 4th book onward the quality went downhill. i gave up around book 8 or 9. i think he's on book 12 now...he's seriously milking this tale for all it's worth.

This series get a solid three stars only because Brandon Sanderson finished it out and brought some life to it. The books were quite tedious to read now that I'm all grown up. I'm surprised I had the tenacity to get through these when I was in high school.

Classic entry to a classic heroic adventure
... and doesn’t fade with time. I haven’t read this book in years, but had fond memories of it.
And it is a good, solid, classic heroic fantasy adventure; and almost self-contained in itself if are willing to misread the ending and skip a few lines.
But the hero has been called to action and almost the entire book is about his adventures trying to free himself of the call.

I read the first six of these books. The first two for myself to see what would happen, and if the plot would untwist/de-convolute itself. The next four, I'm sad to say, I read for a boy I had the hots for.

I couldn't get into this book when I first sat down to read it a couple of years ago- I got lost in the descriptions. However, I LOVED it as an audiobook. Looking forward to continuing the series!
