I loved this and it ends on a cliffhanger which has me racing to read book 2! Devi is a truly kickass female character, a mercenary with ambitious drive. This was a space action science fiction novel with a strong romance element and I was hooked the whole way. Loved!

Annotation: Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach is the first in an action-packed trilogy introducing the inimitable Devi. Devi is a truly kickass female character, a mercenary with ambitious drive. She is always in pursuit of action--in h

It is super, super rare that I pick up a book and find EXACTLY what I want to read inside. Sometimes this is a good thing, this subtle disappointment of expectations; I can be a whiner and judge books by covers/authors/whatevers and then, after (grudgingly) starting a book anyway, become a wholehearted cheerleader of it by the end. 3.5 stars. It's been a while since I watched star trek- and this book had that kind of feel- there were alien races, and weaponry, and mysterious circumstances that were still quite unresolved at the end of the book. The armor infatuation was slightly tedious, and there were some slow parts- and I would have liked this story a bit more if there had been more camaraderie among the crew, but it was a fun read and a nice change of pace. ...more

Fun read to cap my 2016 reading challenge of reading 365 books. Interplanetary science fiction and romance between 2 great characters made for a pleasurable final hours of December 31, 2016.

I can't say firmly that this was a five star book, but by gum that was a five star reading experience. It would be misleading to say it reminds me of Miles Vorkosigan books, but it was kind of the same reading experience--fun, fast-paced, great world-building that mostly flies under the radar. My only complaint is that it doesn't really resolve--it's not quite a cliffhanger, more like a part 1. Must have part 2 now please. ...more

Davi is a powered armor mercenary who is violent, physical, intelligent and seems to attract trouble. what a great space opera. Even the romantic element was great.
