I thought this was an ok read. I think the fantasy elements were interesting.. that Kai was a "demon" who could possess a body... and that he took power from pain. Very cool.
However.. I found much of the rest of the novel a bit so-so. The two timelines were confusing. Characters were not given enough backstory or development to be interesting. I feel like the ideas in this book were interesting but could have been told differently.

A good 3.5, not quite a 4
A very complex story with the kind of politics I love to read. I can see myself getting deep into this series, if it becomes one. But as with any first book in an epic, it is a steep learning curve. The names were a little too samey in places, which made parts difficult to follow.
